“Education-as-usual assumes that kids are empty vessels who need to be sat down in a room and filled with curricular content. Dr. Mitra’s experiments prove that wrong.” Linux Journal
Remoteness. How does this factor effect education? Sugata Mitra explains (in depth i might add) why this is a key factor in lack of education in remote areas. He rented a car and drove through rural India to administer tests to students and found the more remote the area, the poorer the education is.
Sugata Mitra literally cut a hole in the wall and inserted a computer (full of programs) and watched as young children learn to use it (teaching themselves) for various reasons, including browsing. Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in the Wall” experiments have shown that, in the absence of supervision or formal teaching, children can teach themselves and each other, if they’re motivated by curiosity and peer interest. This is a very interesting spin on education (or lack thereof) in rural and remote areas which shows the true value in self-teaching and self-motivation.
